Master’s thesis

The students of Master in Periodontology, Periodontal Therapy and Bioengineering dental-periodontal discussed their thesis on December, 12.

They presented a lot of surgical and non surgical clinical cases and updated scientific literature reviews on greatest interest periodontal topics. Prof. Aimetti and the tutors and teachers Commission congratulated all studentes for their professional and personal growth.

Congratulations to all!

Clinical case – Dr. Fratini

The starting point of my scientific and professional development is the clinical case I showed at the final examination of the Master in Periodontology. The pivotal elements of my on-going professional growth are persistent scientific research, a dedicated approach to the study of all clinical cases and attentive care for technical details. As Professor Aimetti teaches us, “it’s the combination of the individual parts that makes a real difference”.

The patient, 40 years old, suffered from generalized chronic periodontitis. After etiological therapy, he also underwent surgical therapy.

During one session I performed osseous resective (1.5, 1.6, 1.7) and regenerative surgery using Enamel Matrix Derivates (1.4) for the comprensive treatment of the first quadrant.

3D System

The students of the Master in Periodontology have the possibility to use now a new video capture system to create 3D movies through the intraoperative microscope.
The doctors can follow the live surgeries by a 79-inch 3D TV installed in the medical room.

8th meeting at the Institute of Anatomy, University of Lausanne

During the meeting the students have improved their knowledge of anatomical structuresand learned basic and advanced surgical techniques in periodontics and implantology.

Under the expert supervision of Prof. Aimetti the students have carried out anatomic dissections and placed implants using Piezosurgery, inserts for periodontal surgery and implantology, implant kits, membranes and regenerative materials.

In the evening, dinner with students, teachers and tutors in the suggestive atmosphere of Lausanne.

Osseous resective surgery

Dr. Martina Audagna, student of the School, talk about her surgical experience.

Often periodontal patients, after etiological therapy, they have residual pocket that must be corrected surgically. Osseous resective surgery is an option for the treatment of shallow intraosseous defects (less than 3 mm). This type of surgery aims to eliminate the pocket re-establishing a physiological architecture of hard and soft tissues, improving the level of home oral hygiene. I performed this kind of surgical session on my patient, using the osseous fibers retention technique and suturing flaps apically to the bony crest in order to gain keratinized tissue.

The use of operating microscope

The operative microscope, already present in dentistry for more than a decade and used mainly in endodontics, is becoming an important instrument also in the other fields of dentistry.

In periodontology and mucogingival surgery, with the development of minimally invasive techniques, the possibility to have a lightning coaxial to the operator eyes and a wide magnification range permits to pay more attention to details that can be missed even by an experienced clinician.

In particular for my case, the intrasurgical use of the microscope permitted me to manage the extremely thin tissues of the patient with a minimally invasive approach and to avoid sectioning and elevation of the flap at the papillae level, maintaining the highest vascular support to the flap. More, it gave me the possibility to prepare an adequate receiving bed for the connective tissue graft harvested from the palate and, final aim of my surgery, to augment the thickness of the tissues.

Dr. Giacomo Gualini, student of the High Education in Periodontology.

Europerio 8

Prof. Aimetti, collaborators and students attended the Europerio 8 in London on 3-6 June.

Our congratulations to Dr. Valeria Manavella, PhD student, with the poster “An innovative technique for ridge reconstruction: a pilot study with histological analysis” and to our Master students who presented the following researches:

– Dr. Martina Audagna: “Osseous resective surgery with and without fiber retention technique: clinical, radiographic, histological and biomolecular comparison”
– Dr. Marta Giraudi: “Regenerative therapy using Dental Pulp Stem Cells/Collagen Sponge Biocomplex in the Treatment of Periodontal Intrabony Defects: A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial”

– Dr. Adriano Fratini: “Prospective assessment of the use of enamel matrix proteins with non-surgical or surgical approaches in deep intrabony defects: a randomized controlled clinical trial”.

Calandriello Prize 2015

The Calandriello prize 2015 for the best thesis in the periodontal field was assigned to Dr. Mara Gamba, who attend the Master in Periodontal Therapy of our School.

It is a great honour for us the recognition of the scientific contribution of her thesis “Autologous connective tissue graft from the dental pulp in guided tissue regeneration of intrabony defects”.

Congratulations Mara!

Amici di Brugg

The 58th Congress of “Amici di Brugg” was held in Rimini from 21 to 23 May. Prof. Aimetti was invited as guest speaker to discuss with the dental hygienists new insights in non-surgical treatment of periodontitis: scientific evidence and therapeutic options.

Following the lecture Dr. Tomasi discussed about root planing procedures to obtain a periodontal healing and Dr. Graziani about “Root planing complications and dentin hypersensitivity”.
